Mary Roberts Rain Garden

About the Rain Garden
  • This project was funded in part through generous donations from the Warren County Soil and Water District, Deerfield Storm Water District, Ms. Gale Roberts, and Duke Energy.
  • The rain garden is located in the center of the Roberts Park parking lot (south west corner off of Butler Warren Road) and features native plants and educational signage.
  • A proclamation was signed at the January 4, 2022 Board of Trustees Meeting dedicating the garden as the "Mary Roberts Rain Garden" in honor of Gale Roberts' mother.

What is a Rain Garden?
Excerpt from Warren County Soil and Water Website: "A rain garden is a depression planted with native shrubs, perennials and flowers in a place that can collect rainwater. Ideally, the rainwater flows from roadways, sidewalks, roofs, driveways, patios or lawns to a rain garden. As the rainwater flows across urban landscape, pollutants and sediments join the flow. Rain gardens can then get to work filtering out these unwanted contaminants before they reach our creeks, streams and rivers. Rain gardens are effective in removing up to 90% of nutrients and chemicals and up to 80% of sediments from rainwater runoff. Additionally, rain gardens can soak up to 30% more water into the ground than a traditional lawn often alleviating excessive stormwater that can flood roads or property. Rain gardens have additional benefits beyond water quality and flood control. They are aesthetically pleasing, they preserve native vegetation, they attract beneficial birds, butterflies and insects and are easy to maintain after establishment."
