Free, Self-Guided, Open During Park Hours

About
The Carter Park StoryWalk is free, self-guided, and open during park hours.

For a schedule of book displays, please scroll down to the bottom of this page.
Clicking on the book name will take you to more information on appropriate audience ages and book summaries. Please note that the schedule is approximate. (Books are rotated at the end of the month, based on staff availability.)

The Carter Park StoryWalk is a semi-permanent installation. Permanent sign holders were installed along the paved pathway. The signs are interchangeable so that books may be rotated. The StoryWalk starts behind the Quilt Barn just as the paved path enters the woods and leads toward the pond. View a map of the StoryWalk.

During the summer of 2015, Deerfield Township's 6th - 8th grade Taking Action Summer Camp installed the StoryWalk at Carter Park. We appreciate the hard work of all the youth who participated! They marked the post locations, installed the posts and signs, painted animal tracks on the pathway, and wrote verbiage for the second StoryWalk signs. What is a StoryWalk?
A StoryWalk transforms the pages of a children's book into signs that are laid out on a trail. Following the path of pages is a great way to keep your body and brain active and healthy!

The StoryWalk Project began in Vermont as temporary installations of laminated book pages. Temporary and permanent installations can now be found at museums, libraries, and parks across the country. Deerfield Township has adapted the original project to create a semi-permanent installation at Carter Park.

The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library.

Duke Energy Powers Carter Park StoryWalk
In 2017, a $4,500 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation boosted the Carter Park StoryWalk library with a broader selection of books. Grant dollars were used to purchase outdoor, weather resistant signs, with each sign being a “page” in a StoryWalk book. The expanded book selection encourages family literacy and increases opportunities for the community to get active outdoors.

The Duke Energy Foundation provides targeted philanthropic support to the communities it serves. One of the critical focus areas for Duke Energy, K to Career, includes early childhood literacy. As one of the largest U.S. electric utilities, Duke Energy is also committed to environmental stewardship. The Carter Park StoryWalk aligns with these priorities through a targeted selection of books that reinforce environmental education concepts.

Dawn Publications Books
We appreciate the support of Dawn Publications, who graciously provided permission for Deerfield to reproduce books for our StoryWalk. We love that most of the books published by Dawn Publications have extension activities for parents, teachers, or home school students. Check out the Dawn Publications Activities by Book for free downloadable activities.

Creating Your Own StoryWalk?
We developed a brief FAQ sheet of the most frequently asked questions in hopes that it may be useful for others planning a new StoryWalk.
